Ontario Dirt Late Models Invade Ohsweken Speedway

BLENHEIM, ON, CANADA- As the 2008 racing season begins to wind down, the "Ontario Dirt Late Models" visit Ohsweken(ON) Speedway on Friday, August 29 for the second and final time this year.

The opening appearance at Ohsweken in June was a co-sanctioned event with the "World of Outlaws Late Model Series." In that race, the "Six Nations 50," Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY came away the winner. Chris Ross of Wallaceburg, ON was the top "ODLM" finisher with a 12th place effort.

Canada's only dirt late model touring series visited Ohsweken Speedway, a 3/8 mile dirt oval, three times in 2006. Darren Kish of Port Colborne, ON won the first two events with Doug Ricotta of Warsaw, NY edging Kish in the finale.

Kish is not currently competing in the late model division.

In other "Ontario Dirt Late Model" action this season, Adam Ferri of Port Colborne, ON and Rick "Boom" Briggs of Bear Lake, PA were winners at the "Civic Holiday Challenge." Ferri took the opening challenge event at Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, ON with Briggs the winner at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, ON.

Ross was crowned the "Civic Holiday Challenge" points champion after a runner-up finish at Merrittville and a fourth place effort at Humberstone.

Ross also sits atop the current "Ontario Dirt Late Models' points standings with 224 points. He holds a very narrow two point lead over Ricotta(222), and a five point advantage over Greg Oakes of Franklinville, NY(219). Not far behind are Chad Valone of Warren, PA with 206 points and Ferri(200). Completing the top ten is the duo of Adam West, Ridgetown, ON and Paul Turner, Picton, ON with 198 points, Jeff Dayman of Welland, ON(190), the duo of Justin Coulter, Leamington, ON and Jason Haskell, Chatham, ON(188), Mike Lewis of Wallaceburg, ON and Paul Rivait of Tilbury, ON tied for ninth with 183 points, and Rick Baker of Ridgeway, ON(181).

All are expected to be in action at Ohsweken along with many more top late model drivers from throughout Canada and the United States.

Ross could easily be picked as a pre-race favourite for the Ohsweken event. Along with his success at the track with the "Ontario Dirt Late Models," Ross previously captured four limited late model feature wins at Ohsweken while racing with the "Great Lakes Late Models," a now defunct series.

Ohsweken Speedway opened in 1996 and was built by promoter and veteran sprint car driver Glenn Styres. The track is located on the Six Nations Reserve.

The Friday, August 29 racing card at Ohsweken featuring the "Ontario Dirt Late Models" will also offer fans four other divisions of racing. In competition will be the sprints, thunder stocks, mini stocks and fun stocks. In addition, mechanics races will be held for the thunder stock and mini stocks divisions. Gates open at 6 p.m. with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing at 7:45 p.m.

After the Ohsweken event, only one more race remains on the "Ontario Dirt Late Models" 2008 schedule. The "ODLM" will bring down the curtain on its sixth racing season on Saturday, September 20 at Brighton(ON) Speedway.

"Ontario Dirt Late Models" founder and race coordinator Debbie Brush has also announced that the 2008 "ODLM" points champion will be crowned at the organization's annual awards banquet and Christmas party to be held in Blenheim, ON on Saturday, December 6.
