Late Model Driver Frank Levesque Dies in Water Rescue Effort

NAPLES, FL- Former dirt late model driver Francois "Frank" Levesque,48, a Windsor, ON native, died on August 10, 2008 in a drowning accident.

Levesque was canoeing near Naples and came upon several people in the water who were in trouble. In a valiant attempt to rescue them, Levesque drowned.

The veteran Windsor driver started his racing career at South Buxton International Raceway in Merlin, ON. In 2003, he began to travel to Ohio and raced at Oakshade Raceway, Fremont Speedway and Eldora Speedway and in events with the American Late Model Series.

Also in 2003, the "Ontario Dirt Late Models" debuted its touring series and Levesque was a charter member, participating in all of the organization's events.

Levesque owned his own car, the familiar #00, and also fielded late models for friend Shawn Gilles and brother Armand Levesque, also both Windsor residents.

"We all liked Frank," said Debbie Brush, founder and race coordinator of the Ontario Dirt Late Models. "He was a fun French-Canadian guy who supported the Ontario Dirt Late Models right from the beginning. They used to call him the crazy Canadian when he raced in Ohio."

Levesque relocated to Naples, FL in 2005.
